Fade Haircut: Types and Choosing by Face Shape and Hair Type

Skin, low, mid, high and taper fade; maintenance frequency and how to describe it to the barber.

The fade is the most enduring men's hair trend of the last decade, and the reason is clear: a clean, groomed look that is easy to style. But "fade" is not a single cut; it is a family of techniques with different heights and transition styles. We summarise fade types and who they suit so you can choose correctly.

What is a fade?

A fade is a graduated cut on the sides and back of the hair in which the length increases step by step from bottom to top (or decreases from top to bottom). The transition is made with clipper guards and scissor-comb combinations.

Types of fade

  • Skin (bald) fade: Completely zero at the bottom, with a very sharp transition. It defines facial features.
  • Low fade: Starts at the ear and nape; the most natural and office-friendly option.
  • Mid fade: Starts at temple level; the balanced and most popular choice.
  • High fade: Starts above the temple; a bold, sharp look.
  • Taper fade: Lightly thins only the ear and nape; the most conservative.

By face shape

  • Oval: Almost every fade suits.
  • Round: A high fade and volume on top elongate the face.
  • Square: Low or mid fade with a soft top cut.
  • Long: Low fade with a bit of length at the sides balances the face.

By hair type

On straight, thick hair a fade stays sharp and clean. On fine hair a textured top cut adds volume. On curly hair the combination of a fade with natural curls on top looks very stylish. For thin hair, a low fade and short top are preferred.

Maintenance frequency

A fade needs refreshing every two to three weeks to look clean, because transitions soften quickly. At home, hair powder or matte pomade is enough for styling. Dry shampoo after the cut adds volume.

How to describe it at the barber

Showing a photo is best. Giving measurements such as "number three on the sides, a finger's length on top" also speeds things up. Our barber suggests the right height for your face shape.

At Zülüf a men's haircut starts at 550 TRY, wash and styling included.

What happens during the cut?

Your barber first studies hair direction and crowns, then blends upward from the bottom with clipper guards. In the final stage the transition is softened with scissors and comb, and edge lines are sharpened with a razor. A hot towel and neck massage after the cut is a moment of relaxation. Warming pomade or powder in your palm before applying gives a controlled, natural look.
