Setting the beard line, length by face shape, daily routine and ingrown hair prevention.
Beard care is much more than "growing a beard". With the right line, the right length and the right product, a beard becomes an accessory that frames the face; with wrong care it creates a messy, itchy and puffy look. Here are our tips for beard care at home.
Define the beard line
The cheek line of the beard should follow a natural line from ear level to the corner of the mouth; it should not go too high on the cheek. The neckline should be about two fingers above the Adam's apple, in a U shape from behind the ear to the chin tip. A barber can set this line once and you can maintain it with home care.
Length and face shape
- Round face: A bit of length at the chin, short at the sides.
- Square face: A short-to-medium beard with softened corners.
- Long face: Fuller at the cheeks, short at the chin.
- Oval face: Most styles suit; a short neat beard is the classic.
Daily care routine
- Wash the beard with soap or beard shampoo every two to three days; washing daily dries it out.
- After drying, apply 3-5 drops of beard oil; it nourishes both skin and hair.
- Shape with a wide-tooth beard comb or brush.
- Set the desired shape with beard balm.
Itching and ingrown hairs
Itching is normal in the first two to four weeks of growing a beard; skin and hair adapt. Moisturising oils and gentle exfoliation (weekly) reduce the risk of ingrown hairs. See a dermatologist if redness, spots or inflammation continue.
For sparse beards
Keeping a gappy beard short and shaping it regularly gives a fuller look. Sharpening the line makes gaps less noticeable. Besides oil and balm, balanced nutrition (protein, zinc, biotin) and sleep also matter.
Professional care
Shaping at the barber every four to six weeks and sharpening the line with a razor are the best complement to home care. At Zülüf beard shaping is 350 TRY and a classic razor shave 450 TRY.
You can book your barber to choose a beard style together.
Choosing products
Beard oil nourishes skin and hair while balm gives heavier shape and shine; oil suits short beards, oil and balm together suit long beards. Perfumed products may irritate sensitive skin; prefer unscented options. Using hair shampoo instead of beard shampoo dries the beard.
